- Abstract
The article presents a student activity related to hair. The students can have an estimate regarding the number of hairs on their head through a mathematical activity. While practicing this they can improve their math skills too. The article suggests that while standing in front of a mirror, the students should measure vertically along the scalp using a tape and count the number of hairs along one centimeter. Then they have to rotate the tape measuring 90 degrees and count the number of hairs along one centimeter again. The result of the two numbers multiplied together gives an estimate of hairs in a square centimeter. Using another method they can determine the surface area of one's scalp and using certain formulae they can estimate the number of hairs on their head. The article also reflects on some other information related to hair. It is made from a protein called keratin. The color of hairs varies depending on the content of melanin, which gives color to the hair and skin. People have different texture of hair that is a trait by inheritance. The shape of the hair is due to the gene specificity of a person.
