- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the book "Philip Seymour, Or Pioneer Life in Richmond County, Ohio," by James F. M'Gaw. Particular focus is given to the book's portrayal of the legendary character Johnny Appleseed, who was based on the life of the nurseryman Jonathan Chapman. It discusses the eccentric nature of Appleseed portrayed in the book and the impact it has had on Appleseed's literary portrayal since its publication in 1858.
