- Title
“Ich bin eine Engländerin, zur Freyheit geboren”: Blonde and the Enlightened Female in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail.
- Authors
Joncus, Berta
- Abstract
The article discusses the characters of Blonde and Osmin in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Singspiel opera "Die Entführung aus dem Serail." The author suggests that the character Blonde embodies Enlightenment ideals such as rationality and simplicity and that this is unusual for an eighteenth-century woman, as Enlightenment principles were typically taught to males. The article explores the interpretation of Blonde's character by librettists Christoph Bretzner and Gottlieb Stephanie, who wrote the text associated with the opera. Also provided is a discussion of Enlightenment gender roles and the character of Miss Flowr in the opera "Adelheit von Veltheim," by Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Großmann.
