- Abstract
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and often chronic psychiatric condition characterized by a broad range of intrusive, avoidance and arousal symptoms. Given the heterogeneity of symptom presentations and the number of neurobiological systems that are theorized to contribute to the symptomatology of PTSD, the search for effective pharmacologic agents is likely to prove to be particularly challenging. To date, very few well-controlled clinical trials of pharmacotherapy have been completed, although a number of medications have shown promise in open trials and case reports. Even though testing of pharmacologic treatments for PTSD is at an early stage, it is nonetheless valuable to examine which agents offer the most promising outcomes in order to guide future research.
