- Abstract
Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease that is primarily caused by organized microorganisms of the oral biofilm and is correlated to a variety of inflammatory comorbidities. The link between periodontitis and chronic liver diseases is increasingly becoming the focus of research. In animal as well as in clinical studies, periodontal pathogens have been found in the liver, which may have entered the liver's bloodstream through the gastrointestinal tract or directly via the inflammatory reaction in the periodontium. Diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma can be pathogenically influenced by these infections. Remission of hepatogenic inflammatory parameters has been reported after periodontitis therapy. A causal association has not yet been demonstrated. As part of the DIU Master's programme "Periodontology and Implant Therapy", a literature review was conducted on the topic of "non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and periodontitis". The findings are presented in this article, important studies are discussed and highlighted, and relevant practical conclusions are drawn.
