- Abstract
Studying the sensitivity of leaf area index (LAI) to the soil moisture deficit and its influencing factors is of great significance for the ecological conservation and restoration in the Yellow River Basin. In this study, taking the Yellow River Basin as the research area, the standardized soil moisture index (SSI) was calculated based on the monthly soil moisture data from 1982 to 2018 and then the characteristics of vegetation changes and the sensitivity of the vegetation to the different degrees of soil moisture deficit in the Yellow River Basin were analyzed. On this basis, we investigated the dominant factors affecting the sensitivity. The results show that the monthly LAI shows a significant increasing trend in the vegetation growing season (April to October), with the most significant increase in the key areas of afforestation. The sensitivity of vegetation to soil moisture deficit is high from June to October, spatially, the areas with high sensitivity of vegetation to soil moisture deficit in the period from January to March as well as in December are located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and the areas susceptible to vegetation loss are located in the northeastern Inner Mongolia, Ningxia region and the northern Shaanxi from April to November. Temperature, potential evapotranspiration and fraction of photosynthetically active radiation of vegetation are the main drivers affecting vegetation response to soil moisture.
