- Title
South Africa: Green Hydrogen Summit.
- Abstract
President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the South African Green Hydrogen Summit, expressing South Africa's goal to become a global competitor in the green energy industry with the help of other African nations. The summit focused on the hydrogen economy and its potential to contribute to Africa's just energy transition, providing employment and support to vulnerable workers, communities, and small businesses. It is estimated that the hydrogen economy could add 3.6% to South Africa's GDP by 2050 and create approximately 370,000 jobs. The African Green Hydrogen Alliance, which includes several African countries, aims to develop green hydrogen industries through technical support, funding, and market access. The World Bank and the African Development Bank Group have offered loans to support South Africa's efforts in promoting long-term energy security and a low carbon transition. Eskom, the nation's power utility, reported a significant net loss after tax and highlighted the challenges it faces, including the cost of diesel, coal, and criminal activities.
