- Abstract
The present study aimed to demonstrate the effect of herbivory by goats and sheep on seedlings used in a project to restore degraded areas in the Caatinga, in addition to presenting emas as an alternative to the problem. The experiment was carried out in 2,500 m2 plots. Within each of these sample units, seedlings of Caatinga species were planted. The seedlings were monitored for a month to identify dead plants. With these data the mortality rate and the results compared between the animals were calculated. The average mortality rates were higher for the seedlings under the effect of grazing of goats and sheep. The rates ranged from 12-100% for the grazing under goat grazing, 32-100% sheep and 0-24% emas. Statistically, the mortality of grazing under goat and sheep grazing was higher than that caused by emas for most of the 10 species tested. The results obtained ratify the damaging effects of goats and sheep under the Caatinga flora and evidenced the difficulty of RAD with the presence of these animals. The emas were promising for creation in areas of RAD projects.
