- Abstract
Using the database of the Association of Hungarian Simmental Breeders, 16 conformation traits of Hungarian Simmental cows were evaluated by calculating heritability, phenotypic and genetic trends, and by defining some population genetic parameters and the breeding value of sires. Trends were calculated by linear regression analysis; population genetic parameters and breeding value were defined by different BLUP models. The results showed low heritability values (h2 = 0.01-0.19) for the conformation traits. No significant difference was found between the population genetic parameters evaluated by two different BLUP models. Concerning breeding values of sires regarding the same conformation traits, in some cases high while in others low differences were found. Absolute breeding values of sires differed considerably according to the used sire model or animal model. The two rankings of sires by sire or animal model had no significant difference and rank correlations were close. The trend of phenotypic changes in conformation traits was statistically proved while genetic trends showed the quality of sires and stability in their breeding value. Based on the results it can be stated that conformation traits of Hungarian Simmental cows has changed considerably recently.
