- Abstract
One of the concerns regarding the rainfall is its potentially harmful effects related to excess or shortage, primarily affecting the agricultural sector, important segment of the economy. One problem that still exists is the definition of methodologies to identify drought and humidity. Meteorologists and hydrologists proposed indexes to characterize, detect and monitor the meteorological droughts. Among these indexes highlight the standardized precipitation index (SPI). The objective of this study was to apply and evaluate the SPI to characterize the deficit and excess of rainfall in a monthly and quarterly scale on the Northwestern region of Espirito Santo state, Brazil. The SPI was calculated using incomplete gamma distribution and the limits of precipitation that correspond to each category of the index were estimated. The spatial distribution to the index on the period from October, 2009 to March, 2010 was studied. The SPI was effective for characterization and monitoring of drought and humidity on the northwestern of Espirito Santo state. The spatial distribution of SPI identified localities on the region with a critical situation in relation to drought or humidity, which enables to direct actions of water resources management.
