- Abstract
The number of traffic accidents on Brazilian federal highways is a serious public health problem in the country, not only because of the costs associated with the care and hospitalization of victims, but also because of the early death of a part of the population considered economically active. Given the context, this work aims to analyze the occurrence of fatal victims in traffic accidents on Brazilian federal highways. For this, data provided by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) between the years 2017 and 2019 are used, in addition to the logistic regression model in R language. Brazilian federal agencies, in which 11,340 accidents resulted in death (fatal victims) and 173,295 accidents without fatal victims (injured and unharmed), representing a percentage of, respectively, 6.14% and 93.86% of accidents. It was found that the factors that most aggravate the risk of death are: accidents on Sundays, in the Northeast region, caused by pedestrian error, at dawn, with clear skies, on a single lane, temporary detour route and in rural areas. These results allow the development and adoption of prevention policies by the public sphere, in order to reduce the number of deaths in accidents that occur on federal highways.
