- Title
THE EFFECTS OF PUBLIC SCHOOL EXPENDITURE AND PARENTAL EDUCATION ON YOUTH LITERACY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA.
- Abstract
The article discusses the economic and financial problems faced by countries in sub-Saharan Africa, which have been forced to adopt budgetary policies that have reduced public school spending. In virtually every sub-Saharan African country, literacy programs are disrupted by wars and economic disasters. As a result, most of the region's work force are poorly educated and lack the basic skills to contribute to the economy. The report uses a cross-sectional 2002 data set for sub-Saharan African countries to examine the link between public expenditure on education and youth literacy; to determine if there is a link between parental education and youth literacy; and to determine if the religious affiliation of parents has an impact on youth literacy in sub-Saharan Africa.
