- Abstract
In order to improve the population of maize an experiment was conducted in the field of Crop Science Department, College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad, during the spring and fall season of 2013 by using two environments of irrigation, watered and water stress. The randomized complete block design was used with four replications. The objectives of experiment were to estimate the genetic, environment, phenotypic variance, broad sense heritability and co-heritability. The result showed that the genetic variance for all traits in both environments and seasons is higher than environmental variance, which is a high percentage of phenotypic variance, indicated that these traits are genetically controlled. GCV was much closed to PCV, therefore the heritability is high. It ranges in spring season watered treatment from 82% for number of ears to 98% for water use efficiency, and from 59% for number of ears to 96% for both number of rows and number of grains row-1 for waterstress treatment. While in fall season it range from 86% for water use efficiency to 98% for both of weight of root and grain yield for watered treatment and from 64% for number of rows to 98% for grain weight in water stress treatment. All co-heritability of the yield with all traits or between the traits is positive. The highest value is 1.161 between grain yield and number of grains plant-1 in watered treatment and 1.474 for number of ears in water stress, both in spring season, in fall season the highest value 1.023 between grain yield and number of ears in watered treatment and 1.097 between grain yield and number for rows for water stress treatment. This leads to the conclusion that selection is an appropriate method to improve these traits towards increasing the grain yield of population.
