- Abstract
In a meta-analysis, the effects of nitrogen-reduced dairy cow feeding on milk yield, milk urea and protein concentration and nitrogen excretion were analyzed. In addition, a comparison was made between the nitrogen excretions estimated by means of an equation and those calculated based on mass balancing. The data basis was taken from articles published in German between 2003 and 2023. A total of 24 feeding trials with 72 feeding groups from 9 different research institutes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands were included in the evaluation. Nitrogen-reduced dairy cow feeding resulted in decreased milk urea levels and nitrogen emissions over the past two decades, while nitrogen efficiency has remained constant. Using an equation to estimate nitrogen excretions, only a moderate correlation with the balanced nitrogen excretions could be observed. It is recommended to conduct further practical studies to verify the results. Aspects of nitrogen reduction should be focused.
