- Title
PASSIONS ET VIE CIVILE DANS LE LIVRE III DES ESSAIS.
- Authors
BALSAMO, Jean
- Abstract
In Book III of his Essays, Montaigne denounces the passions as diseases of the soul, originators of the private and public vices played out in the theater of France's civil wars. By contrast, he represents himself as an example of the vir bonus, a man if not entirely liberated from the passions, at least making a constant effort to free himself from them: control of the passions is a defining feature of the ethos which has underpinned the exemplary scope of his discourse, which is located within a framework of true civil humanism.
