- Title
"As Serves our Interest best": Political Economy and the Logic of Popular Resistance in New York City, 1765-1776.
- Authors
Hattem, Michael D.
- Abstract
The article discusses the political economy and the popular resistance to the Stamp Act in New York City from 1765 to 1776. The author thinks that the popular majority was closer with the merchant class due to shared interest until the latter support colonial resistance. New Yorkers were divided between merchants who support the De Lancey family and the upstate landowners who support the Livingston family. It explores the threat posed by the Stamp Act to the economic interests of New Yorkers.
