- Abstract
The article discusses the term phrenology, referring to sciences of the brain, mind or human personality, focusing on pejorative and deferential references to it since the year 1840. Topics discussed include the inspiration for the term coming from the work of physician Franz J. Gall, who developed the system of organology, which is knowledge of the organs of the mind, and lawyer George Combe's suggestion of educational and criminal justice reforms based on phrenology.
