- Abstract
The article discusses the experiences of Joachim Gans in North America as the first professing Jew. Topics include a description of the first Jews in North America according to the impressions made from standard Jewish history works, a background on the history of Jews in Bohemia, and the connection of Gans to the Bohemian mining industry. Also mentioned are Gans' work in England, Gans' role in the "Virginia" Expedition, and Gans as Francis Bacon's model for a"New Atlantis" character.
