Salvini's Gamble: Can a Populist Army General Save Lega?
- Authors
Comini, Niccolò
- Abstract
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has chosen Army General Roberto Vannacci as a candidate for the European Parliament elections, aligning with Salvini's fight against the "woke" generation. General Vannacci has garnered controversial media attention for his views on women, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community. Salvini's decision to include a controversial figure reflects his desire to leverage the fears of dissatisfied Italians to maintain his position in the government. Lega, Salvini's party, has experienced fluctuations in support over the years and is currently projected to receive 9% of the vote. The inclusion of General Vannacci has paid off to some extent, as Lega remains above the 7% threshold, but it has performed worse than other conservative parties and has lost support from the youth vote. Salvini will need to consider a new strategy to appeal to young Italians and address their concerns about the European Union. The inclusion of General Vannacci highlights the worsening situation in Italian politics, where both the far left and right are leveraging political outrage for their own gain.
