- Abstract
PURPOSE: Το examine military personnel's perceptions regarding abortion and correlate them with epidemiological aspects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Α questionnaire-based study was performed including students of Military Academy of Corps Offi cers (group 1, n=125) and military personnel of 71st Airmobile Brigade (group 2, n=125). Anonymous questionnaire was used to examine perception of participants about abortion, which was categorized as approval of: any abortion (category 1), termination of pregnancy because of congenital/ chromosomal abnormalities (category 2), termination of pregnancy conceived after rape (category 3), termination in case of severe maternal risk (category 4), and disapproval of any abortion (category 5). Approval rates were compared between two groups and were correlated with age, sex, educational level, contraception usage and religious perceptions. RESULTS: 235 fully completed questionnaires were collected. 23.2 % οf participants stand in favor of any kind of abortion while 23.0% disapprove any abortion. Approval of categories 1,2,3 is increased in students of Military Academy (P=.06 and P=.02 respectively). When adjusting for high-education level in the total population, approval rate was increased only for category 3 (P=.02). Contraception usage was also correlated with increased approval rate for categories 1,2,3(P=.01, P=.005, P=.002). Approval rate was comparable between men and women for all categories except category 2, for which women presented signifi cantly increased approval rate (P=.04). Finally, religious participants are standing signifi cantly less in favor of abortions of categories 1-2 (P<.001), while approval rates for other categories are comparable between religious and non-religious. CONCLUSION: Approval of various indications of abortion is signifi cantly affected by level of education, sex, contraception usage and religious perceptions.
