- Abstract
PURPOSE: Το analyze follow-up outcomes of women with low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 1) which had been diagnosed by histological examination of cervical biopsy. MATERIAL and METHODS: Α retrospective study was conducted during the period 2007-2011 enrolling all patients with pathological cervical cytology in which, after colposcopy and cervical biopsy, histological diagnosis of CIN1 was made. All patients were set under follow-up with recommendation for cytology and colposcopy in 6- month intervals. Epidemiological characteristics of women including age, parity, menstrual cycle characteristics, history of sexually transmitted diseases, smoking and reception of contraceptive pills were analyzed. Percentage of CIN1 progression to higher grade neoplasia (CIN2 or CIN 3) as well as the interval of progression was set in the centre of our analysis. RESULTS: Out of 196 cases with pathological cytology that were admitted for colposcopical and histological cervical examination, there were 53 cases diagnosed with CIN1 (27.04%). Mean age of patients was 32.1± 7.5 years. The percentage of progression to higher stage neoplasia was 7.5% (4/53 cases). All higher- stage cases were CIN2. The mean interval of progression from grade 1 to grade 2 neoplasia was 18 months. CONCLUSION: Regular follow-up examination of patients diagnosed with CIN1 every 6 months may permit the early diagnosis of progression to higher grade neoplasia, the percentage of which is lower than 10%.
