- Abstract
A 71-year-old Japanese woman with mild dementia was admitted to the emergency department due to weight loss and poor appetite. She experienced excessive sweating and fainting after meals, along with hypotension and bradycardia. A chest radiograph and CT scan revealed a large hiatal hernia that was compressing the heart and inferior vena cava. The patient underwent laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair, which immediately improved her symptoms. Hiatal hernias are a relatively common gastrointestinal disorder, but extreme cases can lead to severe cardiac complications. Early detection and surgical intervention are crucial in preventing these complications.
