- Abstract
The article examines the curatorial practice of Frederic William Burton, who served as third director of the National Gallery in London, England in 1874-1894. Also cited are the issues of art-historical expertise and the relative hierarchy of the director and trustees during Burton's term, the art acquisition policy issued by the 1853 Parliamentary Committee, and the appointment of Charles Lock Eastlake as director in 1855.
