- Abstract
Leaf area measurement can be a relevant parameter in studies on plant morphology, anatomy and ecophysiology. Thus, the objective of this study was to generate mathematical model equations that estimate the leaf area of Trema micrantha in a non-destructive way from the linear dimensions of the leaf. For this purpose, 354 leaves of Trema micrantha collected at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Campus São Mateus-ES, were used. The leaves were measured by obtaining length (L), width (W), product of multiplication of length with width (LW) and observed leaf area (OLA). For the modeling 300 leaves were used, where the OLA was used in function of L, W or LW, being obtained the linear models of first degree, quadratic and power. For validation, the 54-leaf measurements were replaced in the equations generated in the modeling, obtaining the estimated leaf area (ELA). The means of ELA and OLA were compared by Student's t test at 5% probability. Mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE) and Willmott index (d) were determined. The best equation was selected by non-significant values comparing the means of ELA and OLA, the values of MAE and RMSE closer to zero and the d-index closest to one. the width represented by ELA = 0.152867 + 0.663894 (LW) and the most suitable for better estimating the area of Trema micrantha leaves.
