- Abstract
In the book "Pearl of the Desert. A History of Palmyra" by Rubina Raja, a comprehensive depiction of the city of Palmyra is given. The author emphasizes that Palmyra was more than just Queen Zenobia and suggests examining the Palmyrene identity more closely. The book provides an archaeological and historical overview of the city, shedding light on Palmyrene society and its familial ties. It also discusses the history of Palmyra in relation to the Roman and Parthian empires, as well as the Islamic era. The final chapter focuses on critical aspects such as the destruction of the city during the war in Syria and the need to preserve its cultural heritage. The author appeals to scholars to play a crucial role in rescuing the remains of Palmyra.
