- Abstract
Detlef Siegfried has examined the former "Wilhelm Pieck" College of the Free German Youth (FDJ) at Bogensee in Brandenburg in his book "Bogensee. World Revolution in the GDR 1961-1989". Since 1958, the college trained international communist youth from Western Europe, Latin America, and Africa. Siegfried analyzes the concept of "world revolution" and highlights the ambivalences of world communism, which manifested in the direct contacts between the young people and the school administration. He uses sources from Danish, East and West German communist youth organizations, as well as published memories, to shed light on details such as the role of interpreters, national and colonial-racist stereotypes, and West-East transfers. However, the concept of "world revolution" remains abstract and fluctuates between an analytical term and self-perception. Further research is necessary to determine the significance of the college for the transformation of world communism more precisely.
