- Abstract
The need for the environmental preservation and the tendency of the lack of natural resources makes civil construction to acquire new concepts and technical solutions focused on sustainability. In this context, the recycling and reuse of the residues by incorporating them into soil-cement bricks represent an alternative in full harmony with the guidelines of sustainable development, attributing them to the condition of noble material, rather than simply throwing them into nature. In this paper, studies and results of laboratory tests are presented, which the objective was to evaluate the behavior of soil-cement bricks by incorporating levels of grinded PET residue for the use in the civil construction. Therefore, characterization tests of soil in Caruaru-PE region and the incorporation of PET waste in the proportions of 5, 8 and 11% were carried out. The standard soil-cement mass trace was 1:10. To perform the compression strength test, a method was adapted to promote the best compression of the particles in test samples of 50mmX100mm. It was observed that the incorporation of the PET residue improved the average compressive strength for all percentages evaluated, where the 11% content promoted an increase of 163.15% compared to the standard trace. The water absorption for all the studied mixtures was in accordance with the current standards. In view of the above, the use of PET residue can be viable in the manufacture of soil-cement bricks, being used in an intelligent and beneficial way to society.
