- Abstract
Fracture mechanics is an important tool in measuring the mechanical performance of materials and components. It applies the theories of elasticity and plasticity to the microscopic crystallographic defects found in real materials in order to predict the macroscopic mechanical failure of bodies. Fracture mechanics uses methods of analytical solid mechanics to calculate the driving force on a crack and those of experimental solid mechanics to characterize the material's resistance to fractures. The objective of this paper is to develop an automated macro suitable for through cracked and double edge cracked plates and to verify its compatibility with the theoretical computations based on standard theorems of fracture mechanics. A comparison is also made for the stress intensity parameters like stress intensity based on the finite element method and the life of the structure, using numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth.
