- Abstract
This article discusses the book "Powering American Farms: The Overlooked Origins of Rural Electrification" by Richard F. Hirsh. The book challenges the traditional narrative that rural America received electricity as a result of the New Deal, arguing instead that private utility companies played a significant role in rural electrification. The author provides evidence to support this claim and sheds light on the relationship between private utility companies and rural America. The article also mentions the book "Growing Gardens, Building Power: Food Justice and Urban Agriculture in Brooklyn" by Justin Sean Myers, which explores the social history and contemporary work of the urban food justice movement in East New York, Brooklyn. Myers uses ethnographic research and interviews to examine how the efforts of East New York Farms! address racial, ethnic, and class inequities in the local food system.
