- Abstract
India is reaping the fruits of the surplus working-age population and it is essential to understand the scenario of workforce participation in North-east India. The growing participation of the population in the workforce is highly significant for the growth of the economy. The regional aspects of economic participation differ from region to region based on the availability and quality of the workforce, among other resources. This study examines the demographic, socioeconomic factors affecting workforce participation in NE India using the 68th round of the National Sample Survey Office data on employment and unemployment. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analyses were used in the study. Findings show disparities exist among the age groups and gender in the workforce participation rates. Furthermore, beyond gender, other socio-economic and demographic factors like age, education, religion, caste, residence, family size, etc., are strongly associated with the region's workforce participation levels, which require integration into effective planning to benefit from its demographic dividend.
