- Abstract
This article explores the exchange of letters between Trygve Hoff and Ragnar Frisch, two Norwegian economists with opposing views on economic planning. Hoff argues against central planning, highlighting examples of defective goods and emphasizing the potential threat to individual freedom. Frisch, on the other hand, supports economic planning and his theories were tested in Norway, although the country eventually moved away from them. The article also mentions other economists who have raised concerns about centralization and questions whether the postwar record of Norway and other Scandinavian countries can be used to refute the "road to serfdom" thesis. It suggests that the Nordic countries were able to maintain their liberties due to the rule of law, an open economy, and social cohesion.
