MONUMENTS AND FOOTPRINTS: THE MYTHOLOGY OF FLEM SNOPES.
- Authors
Robinson, Owen
- Abstract
In this article, the author discusses the mythology that has developed around Flem Snopes in the book "The Mansion," by William Faulkner. The author examines how "Snopeism," or Flem's effect or ethos as it is termed in the Snopes trilogy, transforms elements that are enshrined in the local environment and economy portrayed in the book. The importance of Barthes and his use of Saussaurian semiology to readings of "The Mansion" are discussed, as well as how Faulkner utilizes the mythical processes of Snopeism in the story.
