The article presents a study which examines the impact of active duty service during the Vietnam era on the later-life health among American veterans. It refers to the statistical technique of instrumental variables wherein causal impact is evaluated based on the selection of effects of recruitment into military service. Also explored is a debate among economists calling for changes in the U.S. veterans disability system.
