An essay is presented on the performance of masculinity in the work of Derek Jarman. It refers to the various texts which Jarman produced through his lifetime which epitomizes the particularities of gay experience through the moments of gay emergence within Western society. It focuses on Jarman's first feature "Sebastiane," which explores fully and closely male-to-male relationships and their concomitant elements of performance.
