- Title
The Ithyphallus as Lacanian Signifier in the Marx Brothers' Comedies.
- Authors
Morris, Christopher D.
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of the tenets of Lacanian psychoanalysis to the motion pictures. The example of the psychoanalysis application is Christian Metz, who sees the Lacanian mirror-stage as a founding metaphor for the relation between the screen and the viewer. The analysis of Metz reflects that the mechanical apparatus of a film reduplicates the primordial moment. The issue of how the Marx brothers' verbal human reflects aggression against women is also mentioned. Furthermore, the origin of comedy in rites may account for the association between comic heroes and the thyrsi.
