- Authors
Velasquez, David E.; Aung, Khin-Kyemon; Khan, Ali
- Abstract
The article discusses the increasing role of for-profit entities in primary care and their impact on the training of primary care physicians (PCPs). These entities, such as healthcare payers, retailers, and startups backed by private equity and venture capital, are not only providing clinical care but also training medical students, residents, and clinical fellows in their own or affiliated primary care practices. The article raises questions about the future of PCP training and highlights the need for PCPs to acquire new skills in value-based care. It also emphasizes the importance of monitoring these new training programs and ensuring they offer high-quality education. Additionally, the article discusses the potential impact of these programs on patient outcomes and the need to protect safety net providers and underserved communities.
