- Abstract
The article describes the life and career of Carl Ernst von Gravenreuth, a Bavarian diplomat and administrator who worked between Napoleon and Montgelas. Gravenreuth was born in Stenay, Lorraine, in 1771 and entered the service of Duke Karl II. August Christian of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. After the duke's death in 1795, Gravenreuth became the private secretary of Max Joseph, the new Elector of Bavaria. He played an important role in the negotiations for the expansion of Bavaria's territory and the establishment of the Confederation of the Rhine. In 1807, Gravenreuth switched to administrative service and was significantly involved in the implementation of the Bavarian constitution. He died in Augsburg in 1826. Marcus Junkelmann's book about Gravenreuth offers a critical assessment of his life and achievements and includes numerous contemporary illustrations.
