- Title
REPRESENTING THE “HUNGRY FORTIES” IN IMAGE AND VERSE: THE POLITICS OF HUNGER IN EARLY-VICTORIAN ILLUSTRATED PERIODICALS.
- Authors
Boyce, Charlotte
- Abstract
An essay is presented on representations of hunger and poverty in British illustrated periodicals during the 1840s. Particular focus is given to periodicals directed at upper- and middle-class audiences. Details on representations of the 1845-1852 Famine in Ireland and working-class poverty in England are presented. According to the author, periodical publishers attempted to raise readers' awareness of hunger and suffering in both countries without causing offense or ennui.
