- Abstract
The article explores the issue of housing insecurity among Native Hawaiians in Hawai'i County. It identifies factors such as high living costs, limited economic opportunities, and historical underfunding and delayed assignment of home lands as contributing to the problem. This housing unaffordability negatively impacts Native Hawaiian health, leading to higher rates of depression, high blood pressure, childhood hospitalization, and poor child health. The article suggests potential solutions, including regulating short-term rentals, improving economic opportunities, and pursuing home lands distribution through litigation. It also discusses the impact of housing unaffordability on Native Hawaiian health, particularly in relation to mental health disorders, substance abuse, chronic health problems, and challenges in accessing healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the financial instability of Native Hawaiian households. The article highlights the need for urgent action to address housing insecurity and improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians.
