- Abstract
In this article we analyze the photographic records taken from the indigenous population of the Embera community inhabiting Chocó (Catío and Chamí), which was the subject of evangelization by the Mission of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the sisters of the Presentation (Quibdó), and the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament (Istmina), since the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the images, narratives of the mission, and statistical figures available in the primary sources, we identify and analyze the meanings that the missionaries gave to the process of civilization through evangelization.
