- Abstract
This article discusses the frequency at which adults with long-term tracheostomies should have their tubes exchanged. Currently, there is no clinical consensus on this matter. For high-functioning patients who can provide diligent tracheostomy care, tube exchanges can occur every 6 months. However, for patients who struggle with tracheostomy care, exchanges should happen every 1-3 months. The article also explores factors that clinicians consider when determining the frequency of tube changes, such as ease of exchange, medical history, and the presence of bacterial biofilms. The timing of tracheostomy tube changes should be tailored to each individual case.
