- Abstract
Introduction: The prostate transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy is a standard procedure, we have used multiple schemes prophylactic antibiotics in order to decrease their infectious complications. Methods: In 38 patients three grams prostate biopsy was performed, with the scheme, oral fosfomycin and amikacin previous night intravenous gram four hours prior. The presence complications was evaluated for a month. Results: hematury, rectal bleeding and hematospermia occurred in 13.5, 7.89 and 5.26% of patients with biopsy, respectively. In all cases, the bleeding subsided spontaneously. Two patients (5.26%) fevers occurred, which required hospital management with a dual scheme antibiotics. Conclusions: Prophylactic scheme with fosfomycin-amikacin is useful and easy to administer, rates similar to those reported in the literature complications occurred, but no evidence of a significant decline in the number of infectious complications as expected was found.
