- Abstract
A biography of geologist Grove Karl Gilbert is presented. He was born on May 6, 1843 in Rochester, New York and studied at the University of Rochester where he pursued a classical education. He introduced the concept of laccoliths and recognized three main stages of the Pleistocene lake through extensive reconnaissance. He was known as the father of lunar stratigraphy after he made sketches of the moon's faces based on telescopic observations.
