- Abstract
Cotton fabric was treated with Jasmine oil (Jasminum officinale) solution and evaluated for aroma and anti-microbial properties. Jasmine oil (Jasminum officinale) was also analysed with GC-MS and FTIR to characterise the chemical groups. With increase in concentration of Jasmine oil, whiteness index reduces. Antimicrobial activity of Jasminum officinale was evaluated against gram negative bacteria (Escherichia.coli) and gram positive bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes) using Agar Well Diffusion method. Zone of inhibition for the different treated fabrics indicate that jasmine oil on cotton has a good antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (Escherchia.coli) when compared with gram positive bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes) wherein no zone of inhibition was noticed. Aroma intensity index indicates that 70.3 % of the judges' rated highest aroma intensity for the 20 % jasmine oil treated fabric in comparison to 62.5 % and 7.81 % of the judges' who rated highest aroma intensity for 15 % and 10 % jasmine oil treated fabrics, respectively. Fragrance intensity reduces in natural condition but after 3 weeks no further reduction was observed. Aroma intensity reduces after 15 washing cycles for 10 % and 15 % Jasmine oil treated fabric. However, no such reduction was observed for 20%Jasmine oil treated fabric.
