- Title
"Passion on All Sides": Lessons for Planning the National September 11 Memorial Museum.
- Authors
CREENWALD, ALICE M.
- Abstract
The article discusses the passionate debate surrounding creation of the National September 11 Memorial Museum at the World Trade Center site in New York City. It notes the challenge of balancing commemoration with education, historical documentation and emotional authenticity. As a memorial it will be a story-telling museum with similarities to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). It notes the importance of memory as a joining of cognitive and emotional understanding. It notes that because the events of September 11, 2001 were witnessed simultaneously by an estimated two billion people, personal narrative should be included in the museum. It points out the necessity of an emotional encounter with the events and display of historical artifacts.
