- Abstract
Breakouts out of trading ranges are of the most respected price movements by technical analysts. Trend followers adore them and short term swing traders who base their decisions upon over bought over sold situations get anxious at their appearance. The Trading Range Break Out Rule (TRB-O) is based on price movement of a scrip. The study on the price movements of Indian premier stock exchanges the BSE and NSE between 1998-2010 under standard TRBO rules 50, 100, 150, 200 reported mixed returns even in case of proprietary trades in India. Interestingly the modified TRBO 50-150 and TRBO 50-200 reports excess returns than simple buy & hold returns both in Sensex and Nifty during the study period. In view of the empirical evidence and outcome of this study, it may be concluded that, by adopting some simple trading rules an ordinary investor can get excess returns over simple buy & hold returns in India.
