- Abstract
The electromagnetic mixing (EMM) of liquid steel on continuous casters has become an integral part of the process of making high-quality metal for rolling. The molds of continuous section casters usually use one-and two-coil EMM units located inside or outside the mold. In October 2004, an EMM unit made by ABB Automation Systems was installed on continuous caster No. 1 in the open-hearth shop at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. The unit has a short coil located on the outside of the body of the mold. The use of EMM on caster No. 1 has made it possible to improve the macrostructure of the sections cast on this machine. Comparative data are presented on the quality of the macrostructure of continuous-cast semifinished products obtained with and without the use of EMM.
