- Abstract
This article presents information about the so-called "VNIIZhT Trolley," a rail-straigntening equipment developed under the leadership of V.A. Reikhart, expert in the instrument-testing of rails for straightness of Russia and head of the the Karaganda Metallurgical Combine's program to improve rail quality. The VNIIZhT Trolley was developed in 1980s to measure deviations of the contact surface of rails from a straight line by the three-point method. The trolley has been used only in experiments thus far. It consists of a 1.5-m-long metal frame that moves over the surface of rails on two end rollers. After the instruments have been suitably calibrated, the signal from the pickup is used to evaluate the extent to which a contact point on the measurement roller deviates from the straight line that connects the end support rollers. Information from the sensor is fed to a recorder.
