- Abstract
This scientific letter discusses a case of methemoglobinemia due to glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and the successful treatment with ascorbic acid. G6PD deficiency is a common enzyme deficiency that can lead to oxidative stress and hemolysis in red blood cells. Methemoglobinemia occurs when there is an insufficient reduction capacity, resulting in tissue hypoxia. In this case, a 14-year-old boy presented with symptoms and was treated with intravenous hydration, ascorbic acid, and allopurinol, which resulted in improvement and normalization of methemoglobin levels. The article emphasizes the importance of considering methemoglobinemia in patients with unexplained cyanosis and the potential use of ascorbic acid in treatment.
