- Abstract
All the interested sides in North Macedonia for the local elections 2021 have failed to offer equal representation to women among their mayoral candidates There is a quota requirement for the less represented gender on candidate lists for the political parties and alliances in this country. This quota requires that at least 40 percent of the candidate list to be comprised of the less represented gender. Currently, only six mayors are female. For the local elections in October 2021 only just 8.31 percent of candidates for mayors are women (25 of 299 candidates); 45 percent of candidates for municipal councils are women. This article draws on research findings and interventions undertaken by Northern Macedonian law for gender equality possibilities to raise issues relating to gender equality, women’s political representation and municipal gender mainstreaming and service delivery in relation to the October 2021 local government elections in North Macedonia. We will include an analysis of political party lists in terms of women’s representation, the gender mainstreaming in a sample of political party manifestos and an analysis of gender mainstreaming in a sample of municipal integrated development plans. In accordance to this, the paper contains a secondary analysis of the politics, based on information of existing results that are being run by the political parties. Conclusions and recommendations are based on the current gender attendance in the country as well as a comparative analysis of the existing parties in the politics.
